Case Study: Flood Windows (Wales)

Challenge: The Preservation of Aesthetics

Along the 157 miles of Welsh coastline protected by the National Trust is the Llyn Peninsula and the picture-postcard village of Porthdinllaen. Former fishermen’s cottages perched on rocks on the coast had taken a battering from storms and the National Trust in conjunction with Ymgynghoriaeth Gwynedd Consultancy (YGC) needed to protect them. YGC is a consultancy within Gwynedd Council and after consideration of all options StormMeister® was appointed to provide storm proof windows as part of essential preservation work.

Our Solution:

StormMeister® was approached because of their expertise in flood protection windows, which with steel reinforcing, laminated glass and patented flood seals can equally function as storm proof windows. Tasked with providing a storm protection solution for this sensitive heritage site it was important to produce storm proof windows that not only did the job, but were custom made to match the old timber windows. Storm windows that would seamlessly integrate with the National Trust and Gwynedd Council’s unique aesthetic requirements.

Key Features of the Solution:

  1. Custom Design: StormMeister® designed and manufactured storm windows that were tailored to exact specifications. The storm windows were crafted to replicate the appearance of the original windows, ensuring they seamlessly blended with the historic architecture.
  2. Emergency Exit Capability: To enhance safety and compliance, the installation included a full-size window with emergency exit capability. This feature, unique to StormMeister® ensures that even in emergency situations, a quick and safe exit is available.

Outcome:

The installation of StormMeister® Storm Windows at Porthdinllaen  provided robust storm protection but also seamlessly preserved the heritage and aesthetics of the former fishermen’s cottages. The National Trust now has a storm protection system in place that can effectively safeguard the premises without compromising its historical charm.

The successful completion of the project was another step in StormMeister’s mission to protect properties, preserve heritage, and ensure accessibility for all.
